Heaton Manor Student on Newcastle Youth Council
Congratulations to Samantha Symons in Year 8 who has been elected on to the first ever Newcastle Youth Council. Samantha will represent young people in the Newcastle East constituency to which Heaton Manor belongs. In the lead up to the election, Sam campaigned for more after school activities in Newcastle, improved public transport and more places in the city for young people to discuss their problems confidentially. She is honoured to be elected to represent other young people from her area. She said “I am looking forward to working with the the city decision makers. The youth council should give us a voice and will mean young people have a say in the sort of city they want to live in.”

Astronaut Visit
Ever wondered what it feels like to travel at 17,000 mph or how you get to sleep when you’re weightless? Will we ever be able to travel to Mars or perhaps you would just like to know how you go to the toilet on a spaceship. Well Heaton Manor students have a much better idea about what it’s like to live and work in space following the visit of a genuine NASA astronaut.
Dr Piers Sellers, a British born scientist and astronaut who has made several trips to the International Space Station on the American space shuttle was in school on 1st July to give a presentation and answer a huge variety of questions from students of all ages. Dr Sellers came to the school as part of a national tour to promote an awareness of space technology and over 600 of our students had a chance to meet him. He was very impressed by the range and quality of the questions and was convinced that some students at Heaton Manor would one day have the opportunity to travel into space themselves. See here for more information.

Post 16 Ball
On Friday 25th June Heaton Manor School’s Year 13 attended their Leavers Ball at the Assembly Rooms for a fun-filled night of food, dancing and farewells. Students and staff dug out their finery and dressed to impress to celebrate the end of Post 16 life. It was an important yet emotional event and marks the new beginnings that our 6th Form students are about to embark upon. We look forward to sharing their success on A Level results day in August, and wish them all the very best for the future!

Thanks to all who've donated and "well done" to the riders
Last weekend a bunch of hardy souls from Heaton Manor completed the 82 mile Caledonian Etape bike ride around the hills near Pitlochrie. They've exceeded their £2000 target, money raised for Macmillan in memory of friend and colleague Marie Butterworth, and as tribute to friends and loved ones who have fought cancer. Donations are still being gratefully accepted through our Justgiving page.
